Wandsworth artists will open their houses and studios to showcase artwork to the public over the next two weekends.

Wandsworth Artists’ Open House event will run on 6th– 7th and 13th-14th October, with the opportunity to view and purchase pieces from over 100 artists.

The annual event is organised by Wandsworth Council’s Arts Department.

Councillor Jonathan Cook, Wandsworth’s Culture Spokesman, said: “The Open House weekends are a fantastic opportunity for those looking to buy their first original art piece to do so.”

Exhibiting artwork in homes and studios means there are no gallery fees, ensuring art pieces can be brought at cost price. Galleries can often take 50% of the final fee.

Oil painter Ann Hawksley, who will be opening her home in Putney this weekend, said the event makes art available to people who may not necessarily go out to art galleries.

She added: “Since it’s started it’s been terribly well run. I’m really excited; it’s developing quite well.

“But it’s quite scary as to how many people will turn up.”

An array of art using different media will be on display including painting, ceramics, photography and jewellery.

Kristin Hjellegjerde, Founder and Head Curator of ArtEco Gallery in Wandsworth, said: “It’s wonderful that people have a chance to feel more personal with an artist in a different environment.

“It will bring in other people with an interest in art and people who may not have considered it.”

The gallery on Old York Road, Wandsworth, will show one exhibition this weekend and a new show next weekend, focusing on concepts of geometry.

Artists Chris Agnew, Rachel Garrard and Nick Hornby, who work in London, amongst other places, will have work exhibited.

‘Geometry’ will run until 10th November.

The family event also features guide-led cycle-trails where various homes open to the public will be visited along the way. These will run from 11am-6pm, with the same programme running both weekends.

Trails leave from either the Battersea Park Peace Pagoda or Bertie & Boo café, on the corner of Balham High Road on, October 6th and from either Wandsworth Town Station or Wandsworth Park, by the Deodar Road entrance on October 7th.

You can also visit the event’s website to create your own trails.

Last year’s event saw more than 8,000 people visiting over 100 venues across the borough and generated approximately £150,000 in sales for local artist.
