An elderly woman has died in a house fire in Wimbledon last night.
She was pronounced dead at the scene after firefighters rescued her from a burning end-of-terrace house in Rotherwood Close.
Neighbours called emergency services at 22:58 and the fire was under control by 00:23.
Evelyn Goodchild, 29, who also lives on Rotherwood Close said: “I was watching a film when the doorbell rang and there was a lot of noise coming from outside.
“When I came round the corner I saw huge flames coming out of the front of the house. It was terrifying and looked like it was getting totally out of control.”
Emergency services evacuated around 14 residents from surrounding buildings as a precautionary measure.
The blaze completely destroyed the ground and first-floor of the building.
The cause of the house fire is currently under investigation by the London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police.
