Several Richmond sports and fitness centres are waiving their joining fees this month in an attempt to attract more people.
Hampton Sports and Fitness Centre, Shene Sports and Fitness Centre, Teddington Pools and Fitness Centre and Whitton Sports and Fitness Centre are all offering potential fitness enthusiasts the chance to save the £25 joining costs until April 30.
Councillor Pamela Fleming, Richmond upon Thames Council’s Strategic Cabinet Member for Community, Business and Culture, says she is firmly behind the new initiative.
“This is a great opportunity for residents who want to join their local gym to save money,” she said.
“Our local sports centres boast excellent facilities and there is a large range of coaching courses for both adults and children.
“I encourage local residents who want to get fit for summer to take advantage of this great offer.”
The scheme is open to anyone and local residents will also benefit from a leisure card which gives them discounts on various facilities in the borough.
Council officials expect the initiative to prompt a rise in membership numbers, but private health facilities in the area insist they are not worried about potential loss to their own businesses.
“We are also offering the same deal to potential customers here,” said Jo Pond, manager of private health centre Pools in the Park.
“I was not even aware and am not worried about the deals that these facilities are offering. People don’t just join gyms based on price.
“We believe that we offer great value for money.”
