The wheel at Merton Abbey Mills will be turning again this weekend as crucial repairs on it have now been carried out.

Last October, Abbey Mills based theatre company, the Wheelhouse, raised money through a ‘Guess the Weight of the pumpkin’ competition on Halloween.

There was also more fundraising for the wheel. Lis Parham, who took part in the Halloween fundraiser, said: “The 1st Wimbledon Beavers decided to help out too and did a sponsored walk to raise money which recently paid for the wood to make the repairs.”

The 1st Wimbledon Beavers presented a cheque to John Hawks, Director of Wandle Heritage.

The wheel has been in place for 200 years, and for 15 years as a tourist site at The Wheelhouse, where its main duty is to turn the potter’s wheel, the only one to be directly driven by water power in the country.

The market, who will also be celebrating their 21st birthday on Sunday 6th June, is a favourite for Wimbledon tourists.
