WATCH: Lack of green space halts expansion of Twickenham girls’ football team

Girls’ football team Twickenham Cygnets have stopped taking on new players due to a lack of available green space locally.

The club was founded in 2015 with just eight players but has grown to more than 300 today.

Twickenham Cygnets are based in the Twickenham Riverside ward, part of the borough of Richmond-upon-Thames.

Eamon Newell, Twickenham Cygnets founder, said: “We’re lucky enough to live in a very nice area here, but one of the downsides of this area is the lack of green spaces.”

A spokesperson for Richmond Council said: “Richmond Council recognises the vital role of high-quality green and open spaces for both recreation and sport.

“Our emerging Local Plan strengthens policies to improve access to open space, updates public open space deficiency mapping, and identifies opportunities to improve outdoor sports facilities.”
