The streets of Wandsworth will bear memory of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee for many years to come thanks to a novel pavement engraving scheme being offered by Wandsworth Council.

Residents can buy the special paving stones through the council, have them engraved with their own unique message and then installed in their street by council staff.

Festing Road in Putney will be the first street to have a Jubilee paving stone reading ‘Happy and Glorious’ after residents came together and raised the money required.

Resident Hugh Thompson first came up with the idea of the engraved slabs after seeing them on the streets of Sydney, Australia.

He said: “I think these engravings are a very nice way for the inhabitants of the street to leave some sort of legacy – these are things that will live on.”

The council are keen to support this scheme and have suggested that this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games could also be commemorated with a special engraved slab.

Councillor Russell King, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, said: “They represent a lasting tribute to an event that will be celebrated across the nation.”

It costs £150 to buy a slab and have it engraved and a further £230 for installation, although the cost will vary depending on the wording and the materials used.

Stones can be installed on any street managed by Wandsworth Council, with the exception of red routes and installation which will need to be arranged in advance of the Jubilee in June.
