London is among the top ten of the UK towns and cities most in need of food banks, a new study has revealed.
Financial support website Afforda analysed search volume data to find the average number of monthly searches in 78 UK towns and cities for keywords related to food banks.
This figure was weighed against the population to calculate the average number of searches per 100,000 residents, with London coming in at eighth on the list.
Gain Credit CEO Mark Fiander said: “The rise in food bank reliance across UK cities is a clear indication of the growing inequality and financial strain faced by many households.
“These findings emphasise the urgent need for coordinated action from policymakers, businesses, and communities to tackle food insecurity and build a more sustainable safety net for those in need.”
The areas with the highest rate of average monthly keyword searches determined the final ranking.
Birmingham topped the ranking, with 284.03 average monthly searches per 100,000 people.
The city recorded a total of 3,185 average monthly searches, with the most popular keywords including food bank near me, food bank, local food banks, and closest food bank.
Glasgow was ranked second, with an average monthly search rate of 196.95 per 100,000 people, followed by Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle upon Tyne, Manchester, Bournemouth, London, Bristol, Plymouth and Watford.
London had an average of 145.29 searches per 100,000 people.
From 12,882 average monthly searches, some of London’s most common keywords also included food bank near me, food bank, local food banks, and closest food bank.
