The entrance to the Japanese garden of peace in Hammersmith

WATCH: The 100-year-old Japanese garden in Hammersmith

Water gently runs under a curved stone bridge, with passers by strolling through a wooden gate and past elegant stone lanterns.

It’s a scene that looks like it could be in Kyoto or Tokyo, but it’s all taking place at the end of a quiet residential street in Hammersmith.

The Japanese Garden of Peace in Hammersmith is the oldest publicly known Japanese garden in London and provides an oasis of calm in a busy city.

Volunteers are responsible for almost all maintenance of the garden, so to find out more, I went to Hammersmith and met with the chair of the Friends of the Japanese Garden of Peace

Dario Vianello first started volunteering as a way to spend more time outdoors during the pandemic and has been hooked ever since.
