Water gently runs under a curved stone bridge, with passers by strolling through a wooden gate and past elegant stone lanterns.
It’s a scene that looks like it could be in Kyoto or Tokyo, but it’s all taking place at the end of a quiet residential street in Hammersmith.
The Japanese Garden of Peace in Hammersmith is the oldest publicly known Japanese garden in London and provides an oasis of calm in a busy city.
Volunteers are responsible for almost all maintenance of the garden, so to find out more, I went to Hammersmith and met with the chair of the Friends of the Japanese Garden of Peace.
Dario Vianello first started volunteering as a way to spend more time outdoors during the pandemic and has been hooked ever since.
