Kingston filmmaker recounts dad’s cancer struggle

A Kingston filmmaker has released a free-to-watch mini-series documenting the final month of his dad’s battle with pancreatic cancer.

Matter of Weeks was inspired by Andy Napleton’s dad Ian, who was diagnosed in February this year and died in March aged 68.

In the series Andy, 33, sits in front of the camera and recounts his experience as both a son and carer during the last few weeks of his dad’s life.

Andy said: “The worst part about somebody dying is having to tell everyone.

“I was sending emails, texts, phone calls.

“And I thought, there’s no one really here to listen to me, but that was because I didn’t want to talk about it to anyone who would listen.

“That’s why I created Matter of Weeks in honour of my dad.”

Ian’s late diagnosis meant that curative treatments such as chemotherapy weren’t possible.

Ian said at the time: “I’ve had a great life, I don’t think treatment is necessary.”

Andy has chosen to raise awareness for Pancreatic Cancer UK and to comfort others who are going through a similar experience.

Head of Services at Pancreatic Cancer UK Sarah Bell said: “We are very grateful Andy is highlighting our work, in his dad, Ian’s memory.

“Being told you have pancreatic cancer can be a terrible shock and what follows can often be overwhelming and isolating.

“People are often unsure of where to turn for support but, if you are going through this, you are not alone.

“We have a confidential Support Line, staffed by specialist nurses, who can give you support every step of the way.”

Pancreatic Cancer UK funds innovative research into early diagnosis and treatment while providing support for patients and their families.

According to the Office for National Statistics, Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate out of all 20 common cancers.

Around 10,500 people are diagnosed in the UK per year while around 8,924 die every year from the disease.

Pancreatic cancer only receives 3% of the UK’s cancer research budget.
