Hunting for the best black stuff for your buck in Twickenham this St. Patrick’s Day – or tomorrow for Ireland’s potential Grand Slam victory in the Six Nations? Look no further, here are cheapest spots!
Following alarming reports this week of £20 Guinness’s for sale at the Cheltenham Races, the SW Londoner thought it necessary to investigate if these extremes had reached readers yet around our Twickenham newsroom.
Out of the dozen pubs on and around Twickenham high street we spoke to, the cheapest Guinness was found to be sold at The George of Heath road for £4.95, a snag on the average London price of £5.31.
However, for even luckier a St. Patrick’s day saver, the William Webb Ellis Wetherspoons near Twickenham station on the London road are pulling them for £2.99.
Some of the pricier pints were found at The Turk’s Head, £6.30, and the Cabbage Patch for £6.25.
Landlord Karim of the Barmy Arms by the Thames said: “Everyone always drinks Guinness on St. Patrick’s day. Especially all the rugby fans around here.”
Ahead of tomorrow’s Six Nations finale, Karim said Guinness was sure to be favourite among the fans coming down to watch it near the home of rugby as Ireland look to bag the Grand Slam against England in Dublin.
Whatever the outcome, Karim doesn’t expect any the pints to bring high tensions: “We love rugby fans, they don’t give us any trouble.
“They say, ‘I’m coming to enjoy my day, if we win that’s great but if not there’s always next time.'”
To him, this marks a strong contrast with the football fans, saying: “until recently we never served anyone wearing a football jersey. They think of it like war. Rugby fans know it’s just a game.”
At the Barmy Arms, a pint of Guinness will set you back £5.70.
According to Diageo – between all the wages, transport, wholesale price, and other costs involved – the average cost of a pub-bought Guinness in the UK is £4.73 in London, or £4.20 in the UK as a whole.
