‘It changes the game’ – The Great Gatsby turns the 1920s on its head with female lead

How does the American dream change when you’re a Jazz Age millionaire who is mysterious, exuberant, and LGBTQ+?

Co-writers and directors Peter Todd and Mina Moniri genderswapped Jay Gatsby to add to the fight for equality in the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic, and the Scar Theatre performed a three-week run in December to five-star reviews.

But why does this matter?

Gatsby actor Emily Serdahl said: “I’ve played one queer character other than this since being an actor, I’ve been queer a lot longer than that!

“It’s fun to see it through a new lens and bring our lived experiences to this project.”

Moniri added: “When it was written, representation wasn’t ever considered.

“We wanted it to feel relatable to now.”
