Smash-hit show produced by Theatre Peckham to transfer to Soho Theatre

A smash-hit theatre show produced by Theatre Peckham will be transferred to Soho Theatre this month.

Sunny Side Up, which was first presented in 2022 to sold-out audiences and later returned for a three-week run at Theatre Peckham in 2023, will be performed between 28 May and 1 June at Soho Theatre.

This comes during the 2024 Peckham Fringe festival which will see Theatre Peckham host a line-up of more than 20 artists and creatives from London

Theatre Peckham’s artistic director Suzann McLean said: “Bringing Sunny Side Up to Soho Theatre is incredibly meaningful.

“This play holds a very special place in my heart, as it explores deeply personal and universal themes of love, loss, and family dynamics.

“It is a play that packs a punch and leaves a lasting impact.”

Sunny Side Up follows the story of Peckham-born writer and performer David Alade looking back at his early life.

The play follows Alade’s journey from his childhood innocence through to his tough transformation into manhood, centring on the loss of his father, Sunny.

It tackles themes of vulnerability and toxic ideals and explores how society shapes young black boys into men.

David Alade said: “We are very excited to be bringing a homegrown story from Peckham to Soho, and no better time than the sixth year anniversary of Sunny’s passing.

“Sunny Side Up is not only a tribute but a mirror to the lives of those who have grown up in working class communities, battled social norms, have lost someone and are now simply “getting on with life”.

“I invite you all to come and meet “Lil D”. If you’ve met him before, come and meet a new version in Soho Theatre, and meet a part of you in him.”

Sound design for the show will be provided by Black British Theatre Awards nominated designer Rasaq Kukoyi.

Peckham Fringe 2024 runs from 2 May to 5 June and platforms a high number of women writers, global majority voices and neurodiverse stories.
