A Kingston teen is set to don the iconic red and blue spandex suit and play Spider-Man in the next superhero film.
Tom Holland, 19, who played the lead in the musical Billy Elliot and was in TV series Wolf Hall will be transformed into Peter Parker and his web-slinger alter ego in the new franchise which will be released in July 2017.
The actor reportedly was the only one to screen test with Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans.
Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, Tom Rothman, said: “For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special – all in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

Film producer Amy Pascal said: “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world. “With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” Tom has yet to comment on the announcement but it seems he’s fulfilling his Spidey destiny after sporting this temporary tattoo back in February last year.
