A new comedy night is landing in Clapham, promising to deliver a perfect blend of laughter and libations.
Comedy at The Sun is set to launch on Thursday 26 September at The Sun, 47 Old Town, Clapham.
The opening line-up will feature a blend of established comedians, including acts from ITV2, and emerging names from the UK comedy circuit.
Ollie Taylor, the event creator, was inspired to start the show after identifying a gap in south west London’s entertainment scene.
He said: “There’s a lack of fresh things for young professionals living in south London to do on a Thursday night.
“Thursday is now a big night for young people – people work from home on Friday, so it’s perfect for after-work drinks, Hinge date nights, or just catching up with friends.”
The 24-year-old hopes that the event, which will occur on the last Thursday of the month, will provide a supportive platform for experienced comedians and rising stars alike.
Taylor added: “The line-up we’ve got is phenomenal. I’m really excited to see what these people bring to the table – they are great people.
“It’s a big opportunity for less experienced comedians. It will be fantastic for them to meet, spend time with, and learn from the professionals.
“The event will essentially offer a presentation of the comedy circuit in the UK, and a lively option for young people looking for a couple of beers and a giggle.”
Among those set to take the stage is Dipak Patel, 38, a comedian from South London whose connection to the area and excitement for the event is palpable.
Patel said: ‘The line-up is so reflective of his style – there are lots of acts I am excited to see.
“Anything [Taylor] is involved with, I am immediately all gung-ho for!”
Patel is particularly looking forward to performing alongside Steve Bugeja, creator of the ITV2 sitcom Buffering, who he worked with in a different capacity a decade ago.
He said: “Performing with Steve Bugeja will be a real full-circle moment for me.
“Ten years ago, when I worked in video production, I directed him in a promo – but I’m not sure if he’ll remember that was me because I had hair and a beard back then!”
Patel also expressed his admiration for Carwyn Blayney, 31, another comedian in the lineup, whose comedy he studied before starting his own stand-up career.
He said: “I’ve been at his 100th gig and his 300th gig, I think this will be the first time I’m performing on the same night as him.”
As for his own performance, Patel’s comedic style is a mix of personal experiences and cheeky humour.
He said: “Most of my act is about race and family – a little bit cheeky, and a little bit naughty.
“For me it will be a really lovely learning opportunity, I’m very excited about it.”
The choice of venue plays an important role in fostering this mentorship-focused atmosphere.
Taylor selected The Sun for its laid-back yet intimate and vibrant charm, seeing it as the ideal environment for emerging talent to feel supported while connecting with seasoned professionals.
“We’ve definitely piqued interest. It’s a perfect solution to the coming darkness of winter, and not having anything to do on a Thursday night.
“I know what will cheer me up, I know what will cheer my housemate up, I know what will cheer my date up. It’s a couple of beers and a giggle down at The Sun.”
Doors open at 6.30 pm, with the show running from 7-8.30 pm, and live music in the bar downstairs afterwards. Tickets are available to purchase here from £7.50.
