Gogglebox star George Baggs – himself a famous singleton – is releasing a tongue-in-cheek Christmas single after new research highlights solo sleepers are more likely to draw the short straw when it comes to festive sleeping arrangements.
Research by the UK’s biggest hotel company, Premier Inn, shows one in three people (31%) will be asked to give up their bedroom to make way for visiting relatives this Christmas – with single people being asked to make way for relatives more than most.
For those visiting relatives over the festive period almost half (48%) have slept somewhere other than a bed, with the sofa, blow-up bed and the floor being the most common options.
Parents are the worst culprits for displacing people from their beds (27%), with cousins and siblings coming in a close second (23%) and third (22%).
This is most prevalent in London where house size tends to be smaller than other areas of the UK, causing more of a squeeze for festive families.
In the capital, Brits are most likely to have to put up with sleeping somewhere other than a bed when visiting family for Christmas (57%). The most comfortable sleepers in the UK, however, are in Belfast where only 37% of people have slept somewhere other than their bed when visiting family during Christmas.
Unsurprisingly, respondents of the survey concluded that there is a pre-determined family pecking order when it comes to the allocation of the best sleeping arrangements at Christmas – a number which rises to 54% for those aged between 25-34. A further 54% of those surveyed agreed singles and solo travellers draw the short straw when it comes to festive sleeping arrangements.
Heart-warmingly, however, over half of people said they would give up their bed voluntarily so other family members could enjoy a better night’s sleep. Although, 28% say they only give up their bed begrudgingly upon request.
To highlight the plight, Gogglebox star, popular TikToker podcaster and famous singleton George Baggs, has joined forces with Premier Inn, the experts in resting easy, to launch a brand-new Christmas Single to highlight the bad beds and uncomfortable sleeping arrangements that singles face more than most during Christmas, Hanukkah, and all other festive celebrations.
This witty version of the classic Christmas carol ‘God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen’, sees Baggs describe theall too relatable situation where single members of the family are often last in line when it comes to bedroom allocation. But fear not solo sleepers! Premier Inn is giving fans the chance to win their luxury bedding for this year’s festive family sleepover. So even if you end up on your sister’s sofa, your nan’s floor, or tucked up in your brother’s bathtub this Christmas Eve, Premier Inn will help you rest easy.

A Premier Inn spokesperson said: “It’s no surprise that With Christmas and Hanukkah on the horizon, many homes will be joyfully packed to the rafters with visiting relatives. What our research makes clear however, is that it’s single people who are asked more often than most to give up their beds. When we found out that the solo travellers were drawing the short straw, we simply had to do something to make sure they’re able to rest easy this Christmas, and we hope our bedding helps turn those restless nights, to silent nights – or of course, there’s always room in the Premier Inn We’ve loved working with George to help spread the word – single people, this one’s for you!
