Safe sequel or box office flop? We look at the top five highest-grossing movies so far in 2024

2024 has produced some amazing entertainment for the film industry, with many blockbuster films released recently.

Yet 2024 has also produced some box office flops.

The quality of films certainly isn’t dropping, but studios are relying heavily on safe films like sequels and prequels.

This is shown as the top five highest-grossing films of 2024 so far are all sequels.

These five being Dune: Part Two, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kung Fu Panda 4, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

But these aren’t necessarily high numbers. We are halfway through the year, and we are still yet to see a 1-billion-dollar film.

We spoke to freelance entertainment journalist Tilly Pearce about her thoughts on what it takes to make a billion-dollar movie

Pearce said: “I think the key to making a billion-dollar movie at the moment is proving its worth spending your money to see in cinema, compared to waiting for them to come out on streaming services.

“Due to high ticket prices it needs to be an event to go to the cinema, like Barbenheimer.”

However, so many films this year have released that have been marketed phenomenally, like The Fall Guy, which bombed at box office when taking into account the film’s profits, and how much it took to make the film.

Pearce said: “I think the date has a massive role due to the fact that you don’t want to over saturate your market with other films.

“For example, if two blockbuster films come out on the same weekend it’s not always going to be Barbenheimer as that was a real exception to the rule due to the internet picking it up and running with it by making it a meme, but otherwise the average person can really only afford to see one film every so often which makes the person choose.”
