The Tooting community are coming together to create a large tapestry in celebration of the high street’s history.
The tapestry is being made in Tooting Markets and will have around 40 patches sewn together, with each patch telling a personal story about their relation to textiles.
Community group Meet and Make Spaces are leading the project, and it’s expected to go on display by the end of June.
The organiser, Gemma Lloyd, said: “This tapestry has reached the heart of the community.”
Gemma explained that Tooting has a rich textile history, and through research, they’re uncovering stories that have long been forgotten.
It’s part of a larger project called ‘Sugar and Spice’, which is an intergenerational celebration of Tooting High street, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Alongside the tapestry, there will also be a theatrical performance and a website containing photographs, oral history and many of the stories discovered.
