Brixton Library is exhibiting a series of artworks depicting black women as part of Lambeth’s Black History Month project.
The series, ‘Notebooks’, is by local artist Dr Kimathi Donkor, and celebrates the independence of black women and girls learning and engaging in the world around them.
Donkor explored the key themes of his work in a Q&A session with curator Lisa Anderson last week.
He spoke about the influence of ancient Egyptian styles of art on his work, and the importance of representing black people in this way in order to combat their absence in much of the ancient art that we are exposed to.
The exhibition is available until 7 November.
