London landmark Battersea Power Station officially opens to residents

Battersea Power Station officially opened to residents with a stunning light show this week.

The former coal-fired power station is at the heart of a £9billion regeneration project after lying derelict for decades when it was decommissioned in the 1980’s.

After nine years of construction, the icon Grade II* listed building celebrated a huge milestone with live music from the London Symphony Orchestra that could be heard from across the River Thames.

CEO of Battersea Power Station Development Company Simon Murphy said: “We can confidently say that the Everest of Real Estate, which the power station was once famously nicknamed, has finally been scaled.

“Our power station residents join an already thriving community of people living, working and enjoying this new riverside destination.

“Following this latest significant milestone, we now look forward to completing the remaining elements of the power station ahead of opening to the public next year.”

Colourful art installations and a dramatic light show with a ‘welcome home’ message to residents was projected onto the front of the power station on Monday night.

Homeowners were handed the keys to their new homes in Switch House West, the first residential stage of the Wandsworth-based power station to complete.

It is reported that a luxury three-bedroom penthouse in the complex will cost over £8 million.

The rest of the building, along with 4,239 homes over 42 acres will be finished in stages throughout the rest of this year.

Battersea Power Station will eventually have its own Zone 1 tube station, the first Northern Line extension in over 90 years.

Once open to the public, Battersea Power Station will boast over 100 shops, bars and restaurants.

There will also be a chimney lift experience ride, a glass elevator will transport brave visitors 109 metres up inside one of the Power Station’s chimneys before they emerge to enjoy 360 degree views of the London skyline.
