MI6 chief praises Prince Philip’s sharp mind and experience

Britain’s top spy praised Prince Philip’s ‘wit and directness’ following his death at the age of 99 today.

In a statement on the Secret Intelligence Service website Richard Moore said: “The Duke was a true friend of the Service and we had the privilege of hosting HRH on numerous occasions.

“Always his sharp mind, experience gained from active service and knowledge of global affairs shone through.

“As we all know, HRH called it as he saw it with directness and wit.

“Visits were never dull.”

He ended his tribute saying: “We will hold up his example to current and aspiring members of the Service, and will endeavour to match his levels of service and selflessness.”

The Duke of Edinburgh married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen, and was the longest-serving royal consort in British history. He carried out more than 20,000 solo engagements.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

Together they had four children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
