President Putin sent a telegram to the Queen to express his condolences at the death of Prince Philip today.
The Duke was the great-great-grandson of Russian Emperor Nicholas I and took part in the first-ever state visit to Russia with the Queen in 1994 as guests of President Yeltsin.
President Putin said: “He was rightly respected among the British and international authorities.”
According to the Kremlin, the Russian President wished courage and mental resilience in the face of a heavy and irreparable loss and asked to convey words of sincere sympathy to all members of the royal family.
British diplomatic facilities in Russia will fly their flags at half-mast to honour his death.
