Tributes have flooded in from famous faces across the UK who have reacted to the news that Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died at the age of 99.
It was announced at lunchtime today that Prince Philip, who was married to the Queen for over 73 years, passed away this morning at Windsor Castle.
Brian Cox, Eamonn Holmes and Susanna Reid are amongst those leading tributes on social media.
Cox said: “I sat next to Prince Philip at a lunch a few years ago and we discussed cosmology and relativity for the whole lunch – I hardly ate anything! – he was fiercely intelligent, knowledgeable about the subject and endlessly curious. RIP.”
Dame Shirley Bassey also expressed her condolences on the social media site.
She said: “I’m saddened to hear of the news that HRH Prince Philip The Duke of Edinburgh has passed away. He was an extremely kind & charming man with an exceptional dedication to Queen and Country. My thoughts are with Her Majesty the Queen and her family. May he rest in peace.”
GMB presenter Susanna Reid paid tribute to Prince Philip in view of her 825k Twitter followers.
“Sad news about the death of the Duke of Edinburgh. Such a huge loss for the Queen and his family. His has been her constant, steadfast support,” she tweeted.
The Royal Family released a statement at lunchtime conforming the news.
It said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.
“Further announcements will made in due course.
“The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
