Art students are bringing Kingston shoppers the technology of tomorrow – today – with 3D printing and virtual reality headsets this weekend.
Bentall Centre shoppers can step into the mall’s aptly named “Lab” to experience an array of futuristic programmes and interactive exhibitions designed by Kingston School of Art students.
The free event includes sights normally only seen at a science museum, including workshops on robot making and installations such as an interactive wall with paint you can hear.
Technician Sebastian Kamil-Oglecki, 26, said: “It’s important that people, especially children learn to interact with electronics because that’s the future of the world. Once you know the basics of coding, the electronics that people have in their homes are maybe things they can design themselves without having to buy them.”
Mr Kamil-Oglecki, from Northolt, demonstrated his point by holding up 3D printed portraits which visitors can take home as keyrings.
Other interactive installations include a Piano Hero, a robot car maze, a light and air activated pressure pad and electronic paint which a group of primary school children were experimenting with to connect image and sound.
Earlier today, youngsters were enjoying playing with some of the exhibits (pictured above).
Digital Media Technician Matthew Boardman, 26, from Kingston, who designed the Marvel-inspired interactive wall said: “Electronics and technology gives artists another opportunity to explore with design and creativity, it just gives freedom.”
The weekend is running as part of BCXhibition which has been running throughout May, showcasing Kingston School of Art students’ work and bringing shoppers some food for thought in between browsing the sales racks.
Events organiser Ashlee Ackland, 30, said: “The BCXhibition is Bentall’s concept about bringing in the community and connecting it with the arts school so people would see new ways to enjoy the space rather than just shopping.”
BCXhibition runs until Sunday May 26 at the Bentall Centre’s Lab on the first floor.
