A team of Harlequins supporters and club legends are cycling more than 200 kilometres from Twickenham to Coventry for charity this weekend.
The pack of more than 50 cyclists set off from the club’s Twickenham home, The Stoop, on Friday morning as part of the Rival Ride 2019.
Cycling in aid of The Harlequins Foundation, the fundraisers’ two-day trip will end at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on Saturday afternoon, where their team will play London Wasps in the final game of the regular rugby season.
Head of the foundation Marc Leckie said: “We’re looking to tackle inequality, poor health and any challenges that the most vulnerable in society face.”
Mr Leckie, 40, oversees a foundation which funds projects from south west London all the way to Kolkata.
Set up in 2015, the foundation’s flagship programmes include ‘Switch’, which has been set up to empower future female leaders, and ‘METTLE’, which aims to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of young people.
Harlequins player Mark Lambert said: “Whether it’s women’s sport, disability sport, or reaching out to India or Africa where we do our work, we’re inspiring individuals and equipping individuals to change their life.”
Mr Lambert, 34, added: “Sport’s a really powerful thing; it’s great to watch a game of rugby, but actually it’s the impact it can have on individuals and a collective.”
The foundation is looking to raise £30,000 as part of their ongoing Rival Ride campaign.
