Not a fan of the tackling aspect in rugby? Don’t have a natural talent for football? Or just fancy sitting back and watching your local side potentially make history? This week-end there are loads of great opportunities to immerse yourself in sport in south west London. We look at the five best.
Terrible Football
When you see a football, most people feel the urge to kick it. But most of us also have an extremely limited ability. Well, head down to Clapham Common at 10:30am and take part in a kick-a-round with the self-proclaimed Terrible Footballers. Post-session often involves a few beverages (of your choosing) or a trip to watch some football. It is a popular pastime so make sure to contact one of the organisers to book your space. Boxfit
If you’ve had a hard week you may want to take that aggression out, but in a civilised way. Boxfit at Lambeth College in Clapham on Saturday mornings from 9-10am is the perfect way to relieve some stress without being punched back! There are also sessions at Clapham Junction. For information on both visit: https://www.gomammoth.co.uk/boxing/london/
Touch Rugby
Some people just weren’t built to be thumped to the ground for 80 minutes every weekend. Well fear no more, because at Clapham Common on Saturdays you can go down for games of touch rugby – no more bruises! Games are between 10am-4pm, but for more intermediate rugby players it’s 11am-3pm. It’s £7.50 per individual or if you wish to enter as a team it is reduced to £5.60.
Volleyball
Ever played volleyball and thought you had a natural talent for it? Volleyball Blue hosts an open session on Fridays at St John Bosco School from 7-9pm, just a 10 minute walk from Clapham Junction station. It’s £10 for a session or £25 per month if you want to throw yourself in at the deep-end! Who knows, this could be the starting point to entering the south London Volleyball league. There is also a beginner’s course on Wednesdays from 7-8.30pm at Teddington Sports Center in Richmond for those wanting to learn the basics, which is £90 for 10 sessions or £12 pay-as-you-go.
FA Cup Dream
For Hampton and Richmond, this weekend could see them reach the FA Cup proper for the first time in 11 years. They take on Eastleigh of the Vanarama National League Conference at 3pm on Saturday, hoping to upset the odds. A win would set-up the possibility of a dream tie with Sunderland in the next-round, the club their chairman Graham Wood has been a life-long supporter of. So, if you’re a die-hard south west London sports fan make the trip to Hampshire this weekend and will the boys on towards what would be an historic victory.
