Croydon South MP Chris Philp expects boundary changes to harm Conservatives

The Tory MP for Croydon South has voiced his concern on the impact ward boundaries could have on tonight’s council election result.

New boundaries are being used at this election, and Croydon is also currently in the draft proposal stage to further review them.

And Chris Philp MP feels that the changes will only benefit the Labour party, who won 40 seats compared to the Conservatives’ 30 in 2014.

He said: “The ward boundaries have a negative effect on the Conservatives. If you take the 2014 election and run it on the new boundaries, we would have lost about two seats.

“Our starting point is 30 seats, but if you work it out on the new boundaries we’re effectively starting on 28. That’s the benchmark for 2018.

“It would take a lot a win, but I think we are going to make progress, in terms of seat and vote shares, which is probably going to be better than the London average. Croydon Conservatives will do better than the rest of London.”
