Four-time women’s national champion Cara Brown took a step closer to the great Chemmy Alcott’s record of seven overall titles with a win in the Super G on Sunday.
The 24-year-old from Battersea, who has four national titles, defended her Super G title with a time of 1:25:42 in the Delancey British Alpine Championships in Tignes, which runs from 25th March to 6th April.
This year’s event will once again see athletes from the British squads taking part, including PyeongChang Olympians Dave Ryding, Laurie Taylor, Alex Tilley and Charlie Guest.
The Championships also provides the opportunity to see the best up and coming talent from the Delancey U21 and U18 Squads.
“I got to defend my title since I won it last year so that was really good, a bit of a relief,” said Brown.
“It’s always relief first then you feel happy afterwards.
“I just take it race by race; the coach always tells me not to think about the results just focus on your skiing and the results will be there.
“I try not to just think about it, the record isn’t in the back of my mind but defending my title definitely is.”
Although she was the Super G champion, fellow Brit Yasmin Cooper beat her time in the National Junior Championship run, but Brown claims the fierce competition can only help.
“It’s always a bit of a wake-up call,” said Brown, who recently won two Super G races at the Andorran National Championships.
“It’s a lot easier when you’re not the one being aimed for, when you’re aiming for someone else.
“The more the year goes on the more competitive it gets because the girls’ level is getting better and better and I think more people are getting fed up of it always being me in first!”
As the biggest event in British Alpine skiing, Brown believes the Delancey British Championships are becoming increasingly reputable as the years go by.
“It’s so well run, the races here, you can see the French World Cup team are here and they know it’s a good race, they know it’s a good championship.
“It’s definitely a lot more professional than it has been in the last couple of years – today it’s run like clockwork so it’s been brilliant.”
