Hockey Match Report: Canterbury 1 Wimbledon 7

Wimbledon  avoided a potential banana skin by defeating Canterbury comfortably.

This was a game Wimbledon dominated and the score should perhaps have been well into double figures had short corners been converted and chances taken.

The visitors were without Peter Friend and Henry Weir but Ben Arnold, back from injury, and Ian Gordon both played well in what was a fine all round performance, with the ball being moved quickly and players running well off the ball.

Phil Roper began the rout on 19 minutes followed by an Ed Horler short corner conversion on 31 minutes.

Only 2-0 at the interval did not reflect the game and Wimbledon carried on scoring with Johnny Kinder on 39 minutes, Ed Horler again from a penalty corner on 52 minutes and Simon Mantell joining in the short corner fun with two blasted goals in the 51st and 65th minute.

Canterbury scored with what was their only real attempt on goal in the game, but they were 5-0 down at that stage.

Ed Horler completed his penalty corner hat trick on 70 minutes.

The defence was again impressive and Johnny Kinder was particularly lively further up the field.

This result and a defeat for East Grinstead now means that Wimbledon are now in fourth place in the table, equal on points with third placed Reading.

Focus now turns to another important game next week at home against East Grinstead.
