The latest Snapchat update has sparked outrage with many of the app’s users – with more than 1 million people signing a petition to change it back.
The changes brought in last week include direct messages and snaps appearing alongside stories and the separation of media content and friends – users now swipe left to see and interact with their friends and swipe right to see branded and celebrity content.
Model Chrissie Teigen aired her frustration that she didn’t like her followers no longer feeling like they were friends.
“How many people have to hate an update for it to be reconsidered?” she tweeted.
We took to the streets of Wimbledon to more public opinion. We asked: Do you like the latest Snapchat update?
And the results were overwhelming.
NO: 92% YES: 8%
One ‘yes’ voter Isaac Francis, a 17-year-old Kingston College student, said he thinks it’s ‘pretty cool’ but also acknowledged ‘there’s nothing I can do about it’.
Whereas 21-year-old Ethan said he was ‘used to the older version’ and thinks the new update is ‘confusing’.
This view was echoed by Zara Ahmed and Amanda Lee, both 27, who agreed ‘the older version was much more organised’.
But it’s not just Wimbledon shoppers who dislike the new update – Australian Nic Rumsey set up the Change.org petition to get the update removed
He said: “There is a general level of annoyance among users and many have decided to use a VPN app, or are using other risky apps or steps, to go back to the old Snapchat as that’s how annoying this new update has become.
“Many ‘new features’ are useless or defeats the original purposes Snapchat has had for the past years.”
But never fear Snapchat, there are some parts of the updaters like.
“Please note: with the most recent update (February 2018) text fonts were released, and a number of users believe that small features like this should be kept in place,” Nic continued.
