Aidan Urquhart could well be London’s next alpine skiing star after he got his week off to the perfect start at the English Alpine Championships in the boys super-G race.
The Team Kandahar racer, aged 13, finished sixth in the Under-14s category of the event, sponsored by Rossingnol, coming in with a time of 56.45 seconds.
The 22nd edition of the Championships are taking place in Bormio, Italy, and feature the next generation of Britain’s alpine stars as well as more experienced adults.
The Under-14s raced in the same run as the Under-16s and impressively, Aidan beat many older riders, even more impressively, it turns out he’s quite inexperienced in the event.
“I’m happy that I finished,” said the Shepherd’s Bush youngster. “It’s only my second ever super-G so I was quite nervous but the snow held up really well.
“I was a little bit late on some of the points so I’ll try and work on that when I do it again but I’m happy with it.
“This course wasn’t too scary which I was happy about it.
“I just need to do a lot more super-Gs now, I’ve hardly ever done them so I need to gain a lot more experience, the more I do them the more confident I’ll feel.
“The course today was very fun, the snow was very good, especially over the rollers – that was really fun, a bit eerie.
“I’m doing all the races this week so this is just the start.”
Aidan is due to compete in another super-G on Monday, the slalom on Wednesday and the giant slalom on Thursday.
