AFC Wimbledon were charged by the EFL on Tuesday over their failure to name Milton Keynes Dons by their full name during a home game in September.
During the match, played at Wimbledon’s Kingsmeadow ground on Friday 22 September, the home side referred to their competitors on the scoreboard simply as ‘MK’.
Wimbledon also failed to acknowledge them on the programme cover for the match, which Milton Keynes won 2-0.
The EFL charged the League One side with breaking regulations 3.4 and 3.5, which state that clubs ‘shall behave towards each other and the League with the utmost good faith’ and not ‘unfairly criticise, disparage, belittle or discredit’ any other club or the league.
An independent disciplinary commission will hear the matter.
AFC Wimbledon said yesterday it is still deciding its response to the charges and made no further comment.
The clubs are bitter rivals after the original Wimbledon Football Club moved to Milton Keynes, in Buckinghamshire, in 2003.
The Wimbledon side renamed themselves MK Dons, and disaffected Wimbledon supporters formed a new club, AFC Wimbledon.
