The Labour candidate for Kensington is feeling optimistic after exit polls suggested the Conservative party would not gain a majority.
YouGov polls suggested the Kensington seat is a tossup between Labour’s Councillor Emma Dent Coad and the Conservative incumbent Victoria Borwick.
Cllr Dent Coad suggests that there is a hidden poor in the affluent Kensington neighbourhood.
She said: “This is actually the most unequal borough in Britain, so we have the super-rich ones and the super-poor.
“That’s the proof that trickle-down does not work, if trickle-down worked we would not have this many poor.
“In the ward I represent in North Kensington, 50% of children live in poverty.”
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn survived a vote of no confidence from his party last year however Cllr Dent Coad said she would not stand for parliament under anyone else.
“I’m standing now because I can agree with national policy for the first time in many, many years,” she said.
In the Brexit referendum 69% of Kensington constituents voted to remain in the European Union.
Now, with Brexit negotiations under way, the next Kensington MP will have a difficult task assuring residents.
Cllr Dent Coad said: “I’ve always been a staunch European because either we align with Europe or America.
“We need to negotiate properly with people who know what they’re doing.”
With a 64% turnout in Kensington this year, up from 57% in 2015, more voters are showing support.
Cllr Dent Coad said: “The exit poll is very encouraging, whatever happens here tonight, tomorrow I will still be working for the people of Kensington as their councillor.”
