‘The boys have been fantastic’: Carshalton Athletic boss on FA Cup exit and good form as Guernsey fly in

Carshalton Athletic manager Peter Adeniyi was in reflective mood ahead of a league clash against Guernsey this Saturday.

The Robins threw away a 2-0 lead against Worthing in their FA Cup replay on Monday evening to lose 6-2 after the second-half dismissal of defender Jahmahl King.

But Adeniyi believes the spirit shown by his squad for the majority of the two games against higher league opposition will stand them in good stead in their Ryman South campaign.

“The boys have been fantastic so far this season and we more than competed across the two cup games against Worthing over the past week,” said Adeniyi, whose side were only denied victory in the first tie on Saturday by an injury-time penalty.

“Most of their goals on Monday came through individual errors by us and perhaps that’s the difference between two clubs in different leagues.

“But, if we keep performing like we have been throughout August, then I’ve got no worries about us doing well in the league this season.”

Brendan Murphy-McVey and Ricky Korboa put Carshalton into a commanding position on Monday, but a goal conceded just before half time gave the visitors a lifeline.

The first 15 minutes of a madcap second-half saw Worthing both level and take the lead in between King picking up his two bookings, and they utilised the extra man to further punish the Robins three more times late on.

“If we went into the break 2-0 up then perhaps we’d have gone on to see the game out,” added Adeniyi.

“But that first goal galvanised them and we needed to be more solid during that opening period after half time.”

Carshalton go looking for a fourth win in five league games against Guernsey and Adeniyi will ensure his troops will be concentrated on winning three points.

“I have no concerns we won’t be focused for the Guernsey game,” he said.

“The league is our main priority and the boys will want to continue their good form.”
