Rio 2016 Olympics day ten: boxing, omniums and open water swimming

Mark Cavendish will be hoping he can stay within the top three and finally claim that elusive Olympic medal as the men’s omnium reaches its conclusion on day ten of Rio 2016.

After the opening three events on Saturday Cavendish finds himself sat third on 96 points, 20 behind leader Thomas Boudat of France and 18 shy of Italian Elia Viviani.

However, with the ‘Manx Missile’ just six points ahead of Germany’s Roger Kluge and Fernando Gaviria Rendon he will be hoping to lay down a marker in either the time trial, flying lap or points race.

And Laura Trott begins her charge for a fourth Olympic Games gold medal as the women’s omnium kicks off.

Elsewhere at the Olympic Velodrome on day ten, Becky James and Katy Marchant compete in the sprint quarter-finals.

James, who already has a silver medal from these Games, competes against Virginie Cueff of France, while Marchant goes up against German Miriam Welte.

While Trott has a fourth Olympic Games title in her sights, Charlotte Dujardin and horse Valegro go for number three in the Dressage Individual Grand Prix Freestyle.

She is joined by Fiona Bigwood and Carl Hester as Team GB look to get off the mark in equestrian at Rio 2016.

Jack Laugher, fresh from claiming 3m synchro gold alongside Chris Mears, is back in action in the individual event, with Freddie Woodward also competing in what will be his Olympic Games debut.

Great Britain’s unbeaten women’s hockey team put that record on the line against Spain in their quarter-final clash, the same stage of the competition that Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge find themselves in the men’s doubles badminton.

Ellis and Langridge face Japanese duo Hiroyuki Endo and Kenichi Hayakawa in the morning, while Rajiv Ouseph competes in the last 16 against Tommy Sugiarto of Singapore.

The last male Team GB boxer tastes the Rio action as Muhammad Ali finally gets his flyweight assault underway, while Jess Walker competes in the women’s kayak 200m.

The pool events might be over but the swimming action continues with Beijing 2008 silver medallist Keri-Anne Payne going for glory in a third successive 10km marathon event.

Both Alison Young and Nick Thompson are in the laser radial and laser medal races respectively to round off their Rio regattas, while Olivia Federici and Katie Clark will be looking to improve on their current standing of 18th as the synchronised swimming duet competition moves into the technical event.

And following on from a seventh Olympic Games medal for Usain Bolt in the athletics in the morning are Jack Green and Elliot Rodger in the 400m hurdles heats, Rob Mullett in the 3000m steeplechase heats, Eilidh Doyle in the 400m hurdles, while Sophie Hitchon contends the hammer final after qualifying in 11th place.

Jade Lally will be hoping to follow in Hitchon’s footsteps later that evening in qualifying for the discus showpiece, while Andrew Pozzi and Lawrence Clarke kickstart their 110m hurdles assault and Dina Asher-Smith and Jodie Williams are in action in the 20m heats.
