A prison officer who smuggled hard drugs, mobile phones and wine into HMP Wandsworth was jailed today.
Kwaku Boakye, 59, of Moberly Road, Clapham, was sentenced to six years imprisonment at Southwark Crown Court after being caught with heroin, cannabis, wine, mobile phones and SIM cards on April 21.
Boakye was paid just £360 in exchange for smuggling the goods by the girlfriend of an inmate, Donna Taylor, 34, of St James Road, Mitcham, who was sentenced to four years imprisonment.
Investigating officer DC Scott Pavitt, of the London Prison anti corruption team, said: “I hope that these sentences serve as a deterrent to others who wish to engage in corruption which continues the criminality of those serving sentences inside prison.”
The beleaguered prison has been frequently criticised for overcrowding and unsafe conditions and was the subject of a recent BBC documentary exposé.
Following the discovery police from the London Prison Anti Corruption Team launched an investigation and subsequently arrested Ms Taylor.
Taylor met Boakye in Clapham to hand over the contraband for her boyfriend, Jerry Agyemang, a prisoner serving a sentence for a firearms offence.
