Two men arrested for police officer’s attempted murder by ‘deliberately’ running him over in Lambeth

Reckless drivers who ‘deliberately’ ran over a police officer in Lambeth have been arrested for attempted murder.

The 39-year-old officer was on a cycle patrol when he attempted to stop a black Vauxhall Meriva on Kennington Park Road at around 2.45pm.

The officer was struck by the car, seemingly on purpose, and the force of the impact flung him onto the bonnet injuring his leg and arm.

After the Roads and Transport Policing Command (RTPC) fell to the ground the suspects, two young men in their early twenties, sped off along Camberwell Green Road towards Peckham.

Detective Sergeant Ranjit Sekhon, from the RTPC, said: “I would urge anyone who witnessed either the collision or the car speeding away to contact us.

“I would also like to speak with anyone who saw two men running from the car after it was parked in Frederick Crescent.

“It is extremely fortunate that the officer, who was attempting a routine traffic stop, was not more seriously injured.

“It is important that we speak with as many people as possible to piece together the moments leading up to the collision.”

The police offer was attended by an ambulance and taken to hospital to have his injuries treated, he is now recovering at home.

The car was found abandoned on Frederick Crescent off Camberwell New Road, SW2.

Two men, aged 23 and 22, are in custody at a south London police station after being arrested for attempted murder while Serious Collision Investigation Unit detectives from Merton Traffic Garage investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the witness appeal line on 020 8543 5157 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
