A rogue rubbish collector is conning Merton residents by offering to clear their rubbish then dumping it in the street.
Several members of the public have informed the council about a man knocking on their door offering to take large quantities of uncollected rubbish.
The bogus binman tells residents he is from the council and charges a fee to remove the bulky waste, before dumping it on the streets.
Councillor Edith Macauley, cabinet member for community safety, engagement and equalities, said: “We put the safety of our residents first and we’ll be doing everything to catch the perpetrator.
“We just ask that residents are extra cautious and always ask for identification if anyone turns up at their door.”
Merton council has emphasised all council staff carry I.D badges and urged members of the public to ask to see these badges before any rubbish is collected.
Residents are being told to remain vigilant and they should call Merton Council on 0208 274 4901 to verify.
