East Croydon is to get its own BoxPark as part of a £12million investment in a new cultural quarter, the council announced this morning.
The pop up mall will use 97 recycled shipping containers to create a 100,000 square feet of new retail space in Ruskin Square.
The move follows the success of Shoreditch’s 2011 BoxPark and is a key part of the area’s redevelopment.
Deputy leader of Croydon Council, Alison Butler, said: “Boxpark’s arrival is a sign of how Croydon is rapidly changing and is an important milestone in the regeneration of our borough.”
The park will have room for more than 30 retail outlets and is expected to create 200 new jobs.
BoxPark Croydon will feature a covered courtyard space which has been earmarked for year round cultural events.
Nearby Fairfield Halls, Croydon’s main arts and performance centre, is also receiving funds.
Daniel Moylan is chair of the Mayor of London’s design advisory group which focuses on high profile urban renewal projects.
He said: “Boxpark certainly has the potential to drive growth and prosperity in Croydon, a London Borough which is going from strength to strength thanks to its great infrastructure and booming local economy.”
