Jamie xx, the Putney-born DJ and producer, has been nominated for a Mercury Prize, five years after he won with previous band The xx.
He is one of 12 artists nominated for the prestigious album of the year and the only one on the shortlist to have won before.
Recorded over five years his first solo album ‘In Colour’ has been well received by critics.
Jamie Smith shot to fame in 2010 with his schoolmates Romy Croft and Oliver Sim.
The trio had met at the Elliot School in Putney whose alumni include the Maccabees, Hot Chip, Burial, Fridge and Four Tet.
The shortlist was announced by Lauren Lavern on BBC 6 Music
Blur and Laura Marling were tipped to be shortlisted but did not make the cut.
Other nominees include former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes.

The first Mercury Prize took place in 1992 and was won by Primal Scream for their album ‘Screamadelica’.
Every year the UK music industry enters around 250 albums for the Prize ranging from well-established artists to new and emerging ones.
The winner will be announced on 20 November.
