Non-League Review: Doswell calls for Sutton United to tighten up after dropping points to Concord Rangers

Sutton United began life without captain Glen Southam by twice being pegged back in a 2-2 draw with Concord Rangers in National South on Saturday.

Southam left United during the week to pursue business interests away from the pitch, so was unable to help improve United’s defence which again let them down.

Craig McAllister and Dan Spence twice put them in front, but defensive errors cost them as they conceded their 12 and 13^th goals in eight games.

Manager Paul Doswell felt his team deserved to win but admitted they committed football suicide for their second goal, conceded a minute after taking a 2-1 lead.

The draw was the sixth time these two teams have shared the spoils in their last seven meetings, and the point sees Sutton 12^th in the table on ten points. In the Ryman Premier League, Hampton & Richmond Borough manager Alan Dowson was unimpressed after his side’s 1-1 home draw with Burgess Hill Town. Hampton’s equaliser in the 66^th minute scored by Charlie Moone – his second goal in as many games – came after Burgess Hill had taken the lead in the 46^th minute through Chris Smith. Referee Paul Howard was a central figure having overturned his linesman’s infringement decision to allow Hampton’s goal to stand, he also gave the visitors a controversial penalty with ten minutes left – which Smith hit the post with. “All in all I’m disappointed with the result, disappointed with the performance, I suppose,” said Dowson. “It was a lot better second half than the first but we’ve got to finish chances.” Kingstonian recorded an impressive 3-1 victory at previously unbeaten Harrow Borough, with an early goal from Tyron Smith setting them on course to victory. Pelayo Pico Gomez converted a penalty in the 26^th minute but Harrow got one back through Dylan Cascoe a minute into the second half, after having a goal disallowed in first-half stoppage time. A nervous last quarter of the match was avoided thanks to Jake Kempton’s goal for the Ks in the 74^th minute. Goalkeeper Alexandros Kozakis made his league debut for Metropolitan Police and kept a clean sheet in their 1-0 away win over Farnborough. Jon Nurse scored the only goal of the game at Paddy Power Park in the 16^th minute with a header from Ronayne Marsh-Brown’s cross. In Ryman Division One South, Corinthian Casuals lost 1-0 at home to top-of-the-table Folkestone by virtue of a stunning overhead kick from Ian Draycott. The goal came in the 41^st minute and Casuals’ keeper and captain Danny Bracken made some quality saves throughout the match to keep his side in the game. Casuals boss James Bracken said: “It was a tight game which could have gone either way, but it’s gone theirs and that’s life. “Next week might bring another tight game and it might go our way.” The defeat saw Casuals drop to fourth and they face third-place Dorking Wanderers on Tuesday. Walton Casuals recorded their second win of the season in dramatic fashion with a 90^th minute winner from Luke Medley at South Park. Trailing 1-0 through a penalty converted by South Park’s Kieran Lavery, Walton equalized through Moses Ashikodi’s strike before winning it through Medley. Walton & Hersham lost their 100% home record as they lost 2-0 to Three Bridges, while two goals in either half saw Tooting & Mitcham beat Peacehaven & Telscombe 2-0. Goals from Brendan Murphy-McVey in the 38^th minute and a penalty from Jake Baxter in the 85^th sealed the three points for the home side.

Carshalton Athletic overcame Hastings United 1-0 thanks to new signing Dan Summers’ free-kick.

In the Combined Counties Premier League, a red card in the 60^th minute for Sutton Common Rovers’ Jay Holden ended any hope of a potential comeback in a heavy 4-1 defeat at Knaphill.

Holden was dismissed with the scoreline at 2-1 to the home side, Francois Gabbidon grabbing Rovers’ only goal of the game.

Theo Woodhouse scored in Colliers Wood United’s 1-1 draw away at Camberley Town, while Raynes Park Vale are out of the FA Vase after losing 4-2 at home to Croydon in first round qualifying.
