The fastest broadband in London will soon zoom into the homes of more than 20,000 council tenants in Battersea.
With initial download speeds from super fast fibre optic broadband testing at 1086 megabits per second (Mbit/s), Battersea broadband will beat the UK average speed of 22.8Mbit/s.
Wandsworth Council has partnered with Community Fibre Ltd to deliver the state of the art network to more than 20,000 homes.
The broadband is being tested in the Thessaly House estate before being rolled out across the rest of the Savona estate in next few weeks.
Councillor Paul Ellis, cabinet member for housing, said: “The speeds we’re seeing are absolutely incredible. This breakthrough infrastructure project means our council residents are on course for some of the fastest home broadband speeds in the entire country.
“It’s particularly important for anyone with high data demands like the many local people who work from home or run their own business.”
The scheme has been hailed as a significant progression for London’s broadband market as Wandsworth is the first major council to retrofit its properties on this scale.
Tim Stranack, business development director at Community Fibre, said: “We are delighted to be working with Wandsworth to revolutionise the way Internet services are delivered in the borough and beyond.
“Our agreement with Wandsworth has generated significant interest in Community Fibre from a number of sources who we plan to work with to roll out our service to other parts of London.”
