Quit foaling around! Escaped pony captured by Sutton police

A pony that had escaped from its field and was running among traffic in Beddington Lane was caught and led to safety by 999 response officers from Sutton Police station.

PC Stephanie Merville grabbed hold of the pony’s harness and led it onto the pavement and away from the traffic that had started to build up because of the incident on last Thursday shortly before 3pm

Twenty minutes after police received two calls from concerned members of the public, PC Merville had led the animal back to its field next to Asda in Marlowe Way through the earth mound and bushes from where it had escaped.

The owner was contacted and officers were able to explain what had happened.

“Fortunately traffic had slowed down but it could have caused a major delay for drivers if we hadn’t got the pony under control quickly,” said PC Merville, who quickly nicknamed the male pony Bobby.

Her great, great grandfather, PC Henry Randolph Donaldson, who was based in the Met Police at Wandsworth, died in 1891 at the age of 49 from injuries received on duty two years earlier while trying to stop a horse running loose in South London.
