Decades of war in Afghanistan have destroyed lives, and education infrastructure, now a Fulham-based supper club is putting on a special spread this weekend to raise funds to send books to universities.
Three Oranges is hosting an Afghan-inspired dinner with funds going to Books with Wings (BWW), a Canadian-born charity, which launched this year in the UK.
The on-going wars over the last 35 years means that close to 100 universities in Afghanistan lack funding and resources compared to their Western counterparts.
Laura said: “This is the first time I’ve done this and it’s lots of fun. I love oral storytelling.
“The aim is to form links between the students and universities of our two countries.
“An Afghan pulao dinner followed by traditional tales from Afghanistan just seems like a perfect combination.”
For £10, guests will enjoy a ‘Silk Road’ themed evening of storytelling with a sumptuous Middle Eastern menu.
The dinner includes Afghan Kabul-style pulao, spiced rice with lamb, carrots and sultanas followed by Middle Eastern pastries.
Storytelling is so far confirmed to include King Lear, The Porcelain Goat, The Shy Prince, and the love story of Shirin and Farhad.
The Spanish Air Force has offered to fly the books free of charge to Kabul and Heart but Three Oranges needs to raise funds for packing and shipping costs from the UK to Spain.
The books sent to Afghanistan cover multiple disciplines such as medicine, midwifery, engineering, the sciences, law, accounting, history and literature.
