Sol Campbell reveals he WILL stand as Conservative mayoral candidate in bid to replace Boris Johnson

Sol Campbell has announced he will stand for election as London mayor just three months after rejecting to stand for the safe Conservative seat of Kensington and Chelsea.

The former England defender told Sun Nation that with his working class background he could ‘bring something new to the table’ and ‘give something back’ as London Mayor.

Campbell will join other Conservative candidates for the position at a hustings on July 4.

He has yet to comment on his decision on social media but seemed to already have his campaigning hat on by sharing the news that a primary school is to shut down to make way for flats, asking ‘have we all lost our hearts and souls?’

The ex footballer, who retired from the sport in 2012, was touted as the replacement for disgraced Tory grandee Sir Malcolm Rifkind who resigned after a cash for access scandal in February.

He rejected the offer and instead former Deputy Mayor of London Victoria Borwick stood winning the plum Tory seat with a majority of 7,361.

Campbell faces stiff competition for the nomination from Richmond MP Zac Goldsmith, who is rumoured to be standing, alongside Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Stephen Greenhalgh.

Labour’s frontrunners include Tooting MP Sadiq Khan and Dulwich and West Norwood MP Tessa Jowell.
