One of the biggest results of the election – the number of women in Parliament is now at its highest ever level, with at least 166 women making up a third of the House of Commons.
This is up from 2010 when a mere 148 female MPs out of a total 650 were elected, with women making up only 23% of the House.
But how many female candidates were there in South West London and how many actually won?
Female winners in south west London include Jane Ellison (Cons), Justine Greening (Cons), Siobhain McDonagh (Labour) and Victoria Borwick (Cons), who remains deputy Mayor of London.
In a shock victory, Tania Mathias defeated Vince Cable for the Twickenham seat, overturning 2010’s 12,000 Liberal Democrat majority to end Dr Cable’s 18-year reign.
In Tooting, Esther Obiri-Darko who stood for the Green Party was the only female candidate.
Wimbledon and Battersea also only had one female candidate across all parties, Shas Sheehan from the Lib Dems for Wimbledon and Conservative Jane Ellison respectively.
Putney had an equal share of male and female candidates, with Croydon South having the most female candidates in a South West constituency – three out of seven.
However, nearby Croydon North had a single female candidate, Joanna Corbin of the Lib Dems, out of a total of 8 candidates.
Alexandra Sanderson, Labour candidate for Chelsea and Fulham lost to the Conservatives’ Greg Hands, with 23% of the vote, in comparison to Mr Hands’ 63% and over 25,300 votes.
Labour’s first transgender candidate, Emily Brothers (Labour) came third in Sutton and Cheam, with a Conservative victory under Paul Sully unseating Paul Burstow of the Lib Dems.
Currently, a total of 4 female candidates out of 29 were successful, out of the total of 158 candidates across all our 16 constituencies.
