Liberal Democrat Tom Brake bucked the devastating national trend for his party and held his Carshalton and Wallington seat.
Tom Brake took the lead with 34.9%, gaining a 1.9% majority over closest rival Conservative Matthew Maxwell Scott who gained a 31.7% share.
He said: “It’s been a great honour to serve for the last five years and I look forward to doing so for the next five years. It’s clearly been a very tough night for the Liberal Democrats nationally but I think as a party we did the right thing.
“I am proud of the fact that we went into government to provide stable government at a time of a national crisis and we helped to turn around the economy.
“There are many things we will leave behind as a legacy, the pupil premium, apprenticeships, the tax threshold that has benefited 27million people. I know that we are very resilient as a party but I am certain that the fightback for the Liberal Democrats begins tonight.”
Siobhan Tate for Labour received 15% and had William Main-Ian for UKIP hot on her heels with 14.8%.
Ross Hemingway (Green) 1,492 (3.1%), Ashley Dickenson (Christian People’s Alliance) 117 (0.4%), Richard Edmonds (National Front) 49 (0.1%).
The Liberal Democrats held with a majority of 1,510.
The turnout for the election was 47,444, amounting to 67.8%, down from 69% in 2010.
