Sadiq Khan has been re-elected as Labour MP for Tooting after winning a 2,842 majority in the General Election.
Mr Khan, also the Shadow Lord Chancellor, Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Shadow Minister for London, will serve his third consecutive term in the Tooting seat.
With a 69.9% turnout, Mr Khan won 25,263 votes, a 3,225 increase on his 2010 victory but just a 0.2% increase on vote share.
In the race for the seat Mr Khan campaigned for more houses to be built in the area, an increase in the minimum wage and to reduce the number of payday lenders and bookmakers on the high street.
And, in a trend being repeated around the country, the Liberal Democrat vote collapsed from 8,110 five years ago to just 2,107, as Green party candidate Esther Obiri-Darko finished third ahead of Philip Ling.
Mr Khan said: “Politics has a bad name but anybody who puts themselves forward as a candidate deserves our gratitude.
“I want to thank the Labour party for having the confidence in this son of immigrants, this son of a bus driver, raised on a council estate to be the Labour candidate for Tooting on the third occasion but I also want to thank the people of Tooting for having the confidence in me for a third time.
“Elections are not about politicians, they’re about people and there are too many people today suffering in Tooting.
“This election was about reducing inequality. This election was about saving and transforming the NHS. This election was about building more affordable homes.
“I’m really proud of the people in Tooting and the people of London for the hard work you’ve done over the last few weeks and months.
“There’s a new generation engaged in politics and a new generation of activists and that’s a tribute to all of us.
