Relegation showdown: Symons’ Fulham side prepare for crucial Wigan game

Fulham v Wigan @Craven Cottage

Friday April 10 @ 8pm

Fulham are without a win in seven games as they host fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic in a crucial relegation showdown.

The 4-1 defeat against Brentford and the 1-1 draw at Charlton have done nothing to ease the Cottagers’ relegation worries.

Kit Symons’ side are 20th in the league, eight points off the drop, although Millwall have a game in hand with Symons believing bad luck is the main reason behind the poor run.

Speaking after the draw, Symons said: “I’d say it was a good point, although I’d have liked all three.

“But I think you take what you can at this moment in time. It was a hard-fought, well-earned point.

“Although we deserved all three, as their goal was blatantly offside, it was a horrific decision and it cost us dearly.

“We were the team pushing. We had double their shots – I think they had one shot on target in the game – but couldn’t quite get that second goal.

“There was a lot of endeavour and hard work and Matty Smith was out on his feet at the end when he put that right foot effort over the bar.

“If he was a little bit more lively he would have finished that. We had a few other chances as well but I can’t be greedy, we’ll take a point at this stage of the season.”

In Wigan Fulham face a side in turmoil having gone through three managers and two chairman in the course of a season following the sacking of Malky Mackay on Monday.

Gary Caldwell is now in the Wigan dugout and will face a difficult task keeping up a side that he played more than 100 games for before retiring earlier this season.

In just over a year the Latics have gone from FA Cup winners to 23rd in the Championship, eight points from safety.

On a positive note they may boast a large amount of support at Craven Cottage due to free coach travel being offered to fans.

This game is the first of five remaining that the troubled side have to save their season meaning support will be vital.
