Holocaust Memorial Day: London Jewish community to honour death camp victims

London’s Jewish communities will commemorate National Holocaust Memorial Day at a series of events this weekend.

This year’s events are particularly poignant as it marks both the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenauand and the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide in Bosnia.

South London Liberal Synagogue is hosting an exhibition of the Memorial Scrolls, written by Jews interned in concentration camps and restored over a period of years, this weekend.

Lambeth will be holding its annual Holocaust Memorial Day observance at 3pm on January 25 at Lambeth Town Hall

Holocaust survivors who escaped via the Kindertransport will speak at Lambeth’s annual Holocaust Memorial Day observance at 3pm on January 25 at Lambeth Town Hall.

The event is open to all and will also feature music from the South London Choir and the Corpus Christi Choir.

Czechoslovakian Holocaust survivor Zdenka Fantlova will discuss her experiences during a Jewish Museum talk on January 25.

She will chat about her early years, time in Nazi camp Terezin and the ring given to her by her then boyfriend Arno.

While Arno and her family didn’t survive, Zdenka managed to keep the ring safe through time in seven concentration camps and for her it is still an important survival symbol even today.

Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Kingston University will share his thoughts on the Holocaust and anti-Semitism at Richmond Synagogue next Tuesday.
