Alternative jazz and experimental musician Gwyneth Herbert will be serenading the audience at one of London’s hottest jazz spots tonight.
The Wimbledon-born performer is putting on a show at The 606 Club in Chelsea where guests can expect to see a ukulele, melodica and even a cheese-grater to make an appearance.
Speaking about the show Herbert told SW Londoner that there will be a variety of things to come.
She said: “The gig will be like a pick and mix from my six albums.
“I will also be doing my first ever Swahili song and some surprising cover versions.”
Herbert will be revisiting songs from her critically acclaimed 2013 album The Sea Cabinet as well as songs written during a recent trip to Kenya.
Speaking about her time there Herbert said that the conflict she witnessed illustrated the importance of music.
She said: “I truly believe that art and music and storytelling is the way to bring people together.
“Writing about other people is exciting to me.”
Hebert is no stranger to The 606 Club and has been a regular performer there for 12 years after they gave her one of her first shows.
Herbert’s introduction to the jazz music scene was in Wimbledon when she performed for the first time in a club now called The Pod.
She said: “Our very first gig was in this bar in Wimbledon called Sia and we performed there for a year and a half.
“It holds a special place in my heart.”
